Barcelona will be without Ousmane Dembele, the most expensive signing in the history of the Spanish club, for at least three months after he tore a tendon in his right thigh that will require surgery.
Barcelona said on Sunday that Dembele will be sidelined for three to four months after he injured his leg during the first half of Saturday's 2-1 win at Getafe in the Spanish league.
The club said that the 20-year-old Dembele will travel to Finland next week to undergo surgery by Dr Sakari Orava.
The match in Madrid was the France forward's third appearance for Barcelona.
Last month, Barcelona paid Borussia Dortmund 105 million euros (US$124 million) in a deal for Dembele that included possible add-ons that could add an additional 40 percent of the fee, meaning the final cost could reach 147 million euros.
Dembele was brought in to replace Neymar after the Brazil striker bolted for Paris Saint-Germain on a world-record move of 222 million euros.
The 20-year-old is now set to miss the rest of Barcelona's UEFA Champions League group campaign and faces a race against time to take part in the first Clasico of the season against Real Madrid on December 23.
At international level Adrien Rabiot Coupe Monde Maillot , Dembele will also be absent for France's final two World Cup qualifiers away to Bulgaria and at home to Belarus next month.

NAIROBI, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- After almost one year sabbatical from the road race, world half marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor of Kenya will return to contest the New York city marathon on Nov. 5.
Top of his agenda will be an attempt to improve the course record of 2:05:06, set by Geoffrey Mutai in 2011.
But for Kamworor to have any realistic chance of attacking the course record Ousmane Dembele Coupe Monde Maillot , he has to start by winning the race against spirited competition of experienced marathon runners from Kenya and Ethiopia.
In 2015, Kamworor finished second in 2:10:48 to compatriot Stanley Biwott (2:10:34). Now Kamworor, 24, believes he is the heir apparent to Olympic champion and his training partner Eliud Kipchoge and he will want to prove his critics wrong by taking the challenge to his rivals.
"There is no doubt in my mind of what I intend to do. It is going for the victory," said Kamworor.
The Kenyan opted to focus on the track competition ahead of the London World Championships this season Zinedine Zidane Coupe Monde Maillot , where he finished a disappointing sixth place in the 10,000m race.

At the 2011 Berlin Marathon, Kamworor pushed Patrick Makau to break the world marathon record in a new time of 2:03:38.
